48 Hour Play Generator
Date: Sunday 23 May, from 5.30pm

Great plays can take anything from months to years to create … our playwrights have two days.

Welcome to the 48 Hour Play Generator, where six emerging writers and directors are tested beyond anything they’ve ever experienced.

One of the festival performance highlights, the work which is produced from the 48 Hour Play Generator exceeds expectations time and time again. The short time-frame of creation knows no limits to the writers’ imagination, as five brilliant original works are produced for the stage, resulting in a madcap and totally raw theatre experience.

This year the Malthouse Theatre plays host to the 48 Hour Play Generator, the perfect setting to see the next big thing in Australian theatre.

Featuring new works by Anna Barnes, Elise Hearst, Tobias Manderson-Galvin, Patrick McCarthy and Amelia Roper.
Curator and dramaturge is Ricci-Jane Adams.

Venue: Malthouse Theatre, 113 Sturt Street, Southbank
Prices: Tickets $20 full / $10 concession

TwitterFEST
Date: Monday 24 to Friday 28 May, 2pm daily

Daily throughout the festival, TwitterFEST will host discussions, generate debate and interview writers… on Twitter! Get those #ewfchat hashtags happening at some fast and furious online panels – and get ready to mix it with some of Australia’s best writers.

It’s social media mixed with literary debate – jump online to join the discussion.

Monday 24 May, 2pm
Discussion: What is an ‘Australian’ novel?
Is it based on the setting of a text, the nationality of a writer, specific themes teased out by an author or a combination of all three? Does the emerging market for eBooks provide an opportunity or responsibility to maintain an Australian point of view in contemporary writing? Or do commercial pressures to write for an international audience (via books of a more universal nature) overwhelm the drive for a national literature?
Hosted by Jason Ensor (@austliterature)

Tuesday 25 May, 2pm
Discussion: My iPad won’t sit on the bookshelf…
Is Apple’s e-reader really a game changer for the future of publishing – can that one little multi-purpose device ever live up to its hype?
Hosted by Simon Groth (@simongroth)

Wednesday 26 May, 2pm
Discussion: how is Twitter helping writers?
Is Twitter advancing our careers or the art of our writing – or is it ‘just’ a social tool? Are writers using the software to create new styles of writing or publication? How is Twitter helping writers – or isn’t it?
Hosted by Lisa Dempster (@lisadempster)

Thursday 27 May, 2pm
Stuck in a lift with… Gala Darling (@galadarling), in conversation with Rachel Hills (@rachelhills)

Now that disco is back (trust us, it is), the time has come to determine, once and for all, whether it’s part of the problem or part of the solution. Triple J’s Craig Schuftan presents the case for and against in You Can’t Stop the Musing – the world’s first disco-lecture. Expect to hear from The Silver convention, The Chic Organisation and the Frankfurt School, and don’t be surprised if you start doing that which both Theodor Adorno and the adherents of the Disco Sucks movement considered an impossibility – thinking and dancing.
