So you want to be part of the Emerging Writers’ Festival?

Panellist

Our panels have a representation of people of differing levels of experience and from the wide range of people who call themselves a writer. Within the EWF you will never see a panel just on playwriting rather finding playwrights sprinkled across the program and so it is for all forms of writing.

We also have a policy of one panellist who has never appeared at a festival before per panel

Please note we have limited money for interstate guests and no funding for international guests

The EWF will have an open call out for panellists for the 2009 festival in early 2009.

Advertiser

The EWF has three forms of advertising within the festival

  1. Trade Tables – Present throughout the festival, within the Melbourne Town Hall, the trade table provides you with an interactive opportunity to reach the Festival Goers. Each Trade table includes one folding trestle with table cloth. (180cmx 90cm) Limit of 4 trade tables
  1. Showbags – Presented to every participant, artists and VIP, the EWF showbag is a unique publicity opportunity putting your prepared material directly in the hands of the festival goers. In 2008 the EWF created 400 showbags
  1. Festival programmes - Distributed to partner organisations and relevant cultural venues, the EWF’s A6 programme provides you with a chance to reach both festival goers, those interested and not attending and those interested in literature. In 2008 EWF printed and distributed 2500 Programmes.

Please note the EWF does not allow any other advertising other than the methods listed above

If interested in advertising with the EWF please email your interest to the Director..

Book launches and readings

The festival does not provide opportunity for readings, launches or ‘spotlights on’ within our programming. We are more interested in what you are doing not what you have done

The EWF is a festival for writers of all styles, forms, genres of writing, which celebrates the process of writing not the product of writing. The EWF is a festival for writers and as such has little interest in attracting readers and as a result, we don’t have a huge population of people for an emerging writer to promote themselves to. This being one of the reasons we don’t have the usual showcasing as part of the festival. The second reason is we do not want to judge anyone's quality as a writer, to be a gatekeeper, thus we don’t want to be judging one writer over another for a launch.

Of course it is extremely difficult for an emerging writer to get these opportunities. We agree and are constantly reviewing how we can best provide this service to emerging writers in a way that will be inclusive and beneficial to all.

What we do have is a committed community of writers who are interested in the craft of writing and all that it means.

Performer

The EWF’s showcase performance event is Scrabble, within which we challenge performers to respond to a song of a well known wordsmith in creating a new work for the night.

This event is generally curated and we do not do a general call out for it.

Programming Ideas.

We are always happy to hear of ideas for programming within the EWF and are especially keen on programming that celebrates the writer and the process of writing across the various styles, forms and areas that makes up the world of writers.

Please contact the Director if you have an idea.

Volunteer

The EWF uses volunteers across our program, including staff within our town hall program, as well as running an Intern program in the months up to the festival.

The volunteer call out is generally the month prior to the festival. This call out happens through our newsletter list. Our intern program is advertised through Arts Hub, generally 6 months out from the festival.

We do not take registrations of interest from volunteers until we have done call outs.

 Zine Fair

A core program within the EWF is our Small press and Zine fair. We call out for organisations and individuals interested in tables for this program approximately three months out from the festival.

We do not take registrations of interest in this program until we have done the call out.

Please join our e-newsletter list to keep up to date on all opportunities within the EWF.
